Pharmacological Properties:

• Mechanism of Action: Famciclovir is rapidly converted into
  penciclovir, demonstrating activity against herpes simplex viruses (HSV types 1
  and 2), varicellazoster virus, EpsteinBarr virus, and cytomegalovirus In
  infected cells, penciclovir triphosphate inhibits viral DNA chain elongation,
  halting viral DNA replication without affecting uninfected cells
• Pharmacokinetics: Famciclovir is wellabsorbed and converted
  to penciclovir Bioavailability was 77%, with peak plasma concentration
  occurring at a median time of 45 minutes postdose Plasma concentration time
  curves are similar for single and repeat dosing Extent of systemic availability
  remains unaffected by food
• Distribution: Penciclovir is poorly bound to plasma
  proteins, and Famciclovir is eliminated mainly as penciclovir through urine

• Limitation of Use: Efficacy not established when initiated
  more than 6 hours after onset of symptoms or lesions (genital herpes) or more
