FAQs
What is Betasalic Ointment used for?
It is prescribed for thick, scaly inflammatory skin conditions such as chronic plaque psoriasis, chronic eczema, lichen planus and lichen simplex.
Why is salicylic acid added to the steroid?
Salicylic acid is a keratolytic; it softens and removes the thick scale so the betamethasone can reach the inflamed skin beneath.
How long can I use Betasalic Ointment?
Use only as prescribed, generally short courses. Long-term or extensive use can cause skin thinning, striae, telangiectasia and – with salicylic acid – salicylism if absorbed over large areas.
Can I use it on my face, groin or in children?
Avoid the face, groin and skin folds. In children, treatment must be limited and supervised by a doctor; prolonged use can interfere with growth and adrenal function.
When should I not use it?
Do not use on viral skin infections, fungal infections, skin tuberculosis or if you are hypersensitive to any ingredient.
Do I need a prescription?
Yes. Betasalic Ointment is a prescription-only medicine and must be used under medical supervision.
