Dental fillings restore teeth damaged by decay or trauma. They remove the decayed material, clean the area and fill the cavity to rebuild the tooth's shape, function and appearance while preventing further decay.
Types of Dental Fillings
Amalgam
Made from a blend of metals including silver, tin and copper. Durable and cost-effective, but with a metallic look that not everyone prefers.
Composite
A tooth-coloured resin-and-glass mixture that bonds directly to the tooth, ideal for small to medium cavities where appearance matters.
Ceramic (inlays/onlays)
Porcelain fillings that are durable, stain-resistant and natural-looking, made in a lab and well tolerated by people with metal allergies.
Glass ionomer
Releases fluoride to help protect the tooth, but is less durable, so it is often used for temporary fillings or low-pressure areas.
The Filling Procedure
Your dentist first examines the tooth, takes X-rays if needed and numbs the area, sometimes isolating the tooth with a rubber dam. The decay is removed and the cavity cleaned and prepared. The filling material is placed (and light-cured in layers for some types), then shaped to your bite and polished smooth.
Pros and Cons
Fillings restore function and structure, prevent further decay, suit different needs and budgets, and are minimally invasive. On the downside, some materials can wear over time or need replacing, deeper fillings may cause temporary sensitivity, certain materials cost more, and a small number of people react to metal-based fillings.
Aftercare and Recovery
Wait for the anaesthetic to wear off before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Mild sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure is normal for a few days. For the first 24 hours, avoid hard, chewy or sticky foods and chew on the opposite side. Brush twice daily and floss gently, and contact your dentist if you notice swelling, lasting pain or other signs of a problem.
Keeping Fillings in Good Shape
With good care, fillings last for years. Regular check-ups let your dentist catch wear or secondary decay early, while brushing, flossing and fluoride products help prolong their life.
