Alfa-D 1mcg Capsule contains alfacalcidol (1-alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3) at a higher maintenance strength. It is used to manage hypocalcemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and renal osteodystrophy in patients with chronic kidney disease, as well as certain forms of rickets and osteomalacia where bone mineralization is impaired. The liver rapidly converts alfacalcidol to calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, which improves intestinal calcium absorption and regulates phosphate metabolism.

Hypercalcaemia monitoring required: At the 1mcg dose level, the risk of hypercalcaemia and hyperphosphataemia is meaningful. Serum calcium and phosphate must be monitored regularly, including in dialysis patients. Avoid concurrent calcium or magnesium-containing supplements unless prescribed, and inform your doctor about thiazide diuretics, digoxin (risk of arrhythmia with high calcium), or enzyme-inducing drugs. Report nausea, vomiting, thirst, constipation, weakness, or confusion immediately.
