What is Amdipine 10mg?

Amdipine Tablets 10mg contain Amlodipine Besylate, a third-generation dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB) used for the management of hypertension (high blood pressure) and stable/variant angina (chest pain). Amlodipine has an exceptionally long half-life of 35–50 hours, enabling once-daily dosing with smooth, sustained blood pressure control without reflex tachycardia. Prescription required.

How Does Amdipine Work?

Amlodipine selectively blocks L-type voltage-gated calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle and cardiac tissue. This prevents calcium influx, causing peripheral arterial vasodilation. The result is reduced peripheral vascular resistance and lower blood pressure, reduced cardiac afterload, and improved coronary blood flow — relieving anginal symptoms without significantly affecting heart rate.

Uses of Amdipine 10mg

Indicated for: essential hypertension, chronic stable angina, variant (Prinzmetal) angina. Used as monotherapy or in combination with ACE inhibitors, ARBs or diuretics for blood pressure targets. Also reduces cardiovascular event risk in hypertensive patients. Consult your doctor — prescription required.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 5–10 mg once daily. Starting dose typically 5 mg; may be uptitrated to 10 mg after 7–14 days if needed. Take at the same time daily with or without food. Do not crush or chew. Do not stop without medical advice. For related anti-hypertensive medicines, see our full collection.

Side Effects

Common: peripheral oedema (ankle swelling — most frequent, dose-dependent), headache, flushing, dizziness, fatigue. Less common: palpitations, nausea, abdominal pain. Rare: gingival hyperplasia with long-term use. Oedema is due to arteriolar dilation, not fluid retention — diuretics may not relieve it; dose reduction may help.

Precautions

Caution in: severe hepatic impairment (reduce dose; half-life prolonged), hypotension, aortic stenosis. Generally safe in renal impairment and elderly patients. Avoid grapefruit juice (CYP3A4 interaction may raise levels). Drug interactions: simvastatin (limit to 20 mg/day when combined with amlodipine 10mg), cyclosporine. Pregnancy: avoid unless clearly necessary. Do not stop abruptly — may precipitate angina. This is a prescription-only medicine; consult your doctor. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between Amdipine 5mg and 10mg?
A: Both contain Amlodipine Besylate; 10mg is the higher maintenance dose used when 5mg does not achieve target blood pressure control, prescribed by your doctor based on individual response.

Q: Can I take Amdipine once daily?
A: Yes. Amlodipine's very long half-life (35–50 hours) means once-daily dosing provides stable, round-the-clock blood pressure control.

Q: Is ankle swelling from Amdipine dangerous?
A: Peripheral oedema is a common dose-dependent side effect of amlodipine caused by arteriolar dilation. It is usually not dangerous but should be reported to your doctor if severe.

Usage & Benefits
  • Lowers blood pressure through peripheral arterial vasodilation (calcium channel blockade)
  • Relieves chronic stable and variant (Prinzmetal) angina
  • Once-daily dosing due to long half-life (35–50 hours)
  • Minimal reflex tachycardia compared to other CCB classes
  • Well-tolerated in elderly patients and those with renal impairment
  • Reduces risk of cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients
How To Use

Adults: 5–10 mg once daily. Standard starting dose is 5mg; titrate to 10mg after 7–14 days if blood pressure target not reached. Take at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole — do not crush or chew. Do not stop without medical advice. Prescription required.

FAQs

What is the difference between Amdipine 5mg and 10mg?

Both contain Amlodipine Besylate. 10mg is the higher maintenance dose used when 5mg does not achieve target blood pressure, prescribed based on individual response.

Why does Amdipine cause ankle swelling?

Peripheral oedema (ankle swelling) is the most common dose-dependent side effect of amlodipine, caused by arteriolar dilation. It is usually harmless but should be reported to your doctor.

Can I take Amdipine with simvastatin?

Caution: when amlodipine 10mg is co-administered with simvastatin, limit simvastatin to a maximum of 20mg/day due to increased exposure. Consult your doctor.
