Danazol 100mg Capsules — Hormonal Therapy for Endometriosis
Danazol 100mg Capsules contain danazol, a synthetic androgen (derivative of ethisterone) that suppresses pituitary gonadotrophin (LH and FSH) release. By lowering ovarian oestrogen production it shrinks ectopic endometrial tissue, reduces pelvic pain and decreases heavy or painful menstrual bleeding. The 100 mg strength is most often used for milder presentations or as a step-down/maintenance dose in endometriosis and benign breast disease.
This medicine is also used in selected cases of fibrocystic breast disease where it reduces breast pain, tenderness and nodularity. Treatment is normally given for a defined course (often 3–6 months) under specialist supervision, with attention to bone, liver and cardiovascular risk. Common side effects relate to its androgenic action and include acne, oily skin, weight gain, fluid retention, mood change, hot flushes and menstrual disturbance. Voice deepening, hirsutism or clitoral enlargement can be irreversible and require prompt discontinuation.
Danazol is prescription required and is CONTRAINDICATED in pregnancy — it is teratogenic and can virilise a female foetus. Effective non-hormonal contraception must be used throughout therapy and pregnancy must be excluded before each course. Avoid in active liver disease, porphyria, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, hormone-sensitive cancers and severe cardiac, renal or hepatic dysfunction.
