Danazol 200mg Capsules — Hormonal Therapy
Description
Danazol 200mg Capsules — Hormonal Therapy for Endometriosis, Fibrocystic Breast Disease & Hereditary Angioedema
Danazol 200mg Capsules contain danazol, a synthetic androgen derived from ethisterone. It suppresses pituitary gonadotrophin (LH and FSH) release, lowers ovarian oestrogen output, and exerts weak androgenic activity at peripheral tissues. The 200 mg strength is typically used as the standard adult unit for initiation or maintenance therapy, allowing convenient dose-titration (often 200–1000 mg per day in divided doses).
This strength is widely prescribed for moderate-to-severe endometriosis to reduce pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoea and heavy bleeding; for fibrocystic breast disease to relieve breast pain, tenderness and nodularity; and for hereditary angioedema (HAE), where it works by raising C1-esterase inhibitor levels and reducing the frequency and severity of swelling attacks. Treatment is usually time-limited under specialist supervision, with attention to liver function, lipids, blood pressure and bone health.
Danazol is prescription required and is CONTRAINDICATED in pregnancy — it is teratogenic and can virilise a female foetus. Effective non-hormonal contraception must be used throughout therapy and pregnancy must be excluded before starting. Avoid in active liver disease, porphyria, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, hormone-sensitive cancers and severe cardiac, renal or hepatic dysfunction. Voice deepening, hirsutism or clitoral enlargement may be irreversible and require prompt discontinuation.
