FAQs

What is Effidex Ointment used for?

It is a prescription topical steroid for inflammatory, itchy skin conditions such as eczema, contact dermatitis, neurodermatitis, lichen planus and discoid lupus that respond to corticosteroids.

How strong is Effidex?

Betamethasone dipropionate 0.05% is classified as a potent topical corticosteroid. It must be used sparingly and only as prescribed.

How long can I use it?

Generally for short courses; do not use for more than 4 weeks without your doctor's review. Stopping suddenly after long use can cause a rebound flare.

Can it be used on the face or on children?

Avoid the face and skin folds unless your doctor advises it. Children, especially infants, absorb more steroid through the skin and need brief, supervised use only.

What side effects should I watch for?

Skin thinning, stretch marks, visible blood vessels, perioral dermatitis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, masking of infection and, with extensive use, suppression of adrenal function.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Effidex Ointment is a prescription-only medicine and should be used under medical supervision.
