Fusiderm Cream (Fusidic Acid 2% W/W) 15gram

Fusiderm Cream 15gram by Martin Dow is a prescription topical antibiotic containing Fusidic Acid BP 2% w/w. It exhibits potent antibacterial activity against gram-positive organisms — particularly Staphylococcus aureus (including penicillin-resistant strains), Streptococcus spp., and Corynebacterium minutissimum. Fusidic acid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by interfering with aminoacyl-RNA transfer on ribosomes. Indicated for primary skin infections (impetigo contagiosa, erythrasma) and secondary skin infections (infected wounds and burns). Penetrates intact skin to reach the infection site. Sold on prescription of a registered medical practitioner only.

Fusiderm Cream (Fusidic Acid 2% w/w):

Your Solution for Skin Infections

Description:

Fusiderm Cream, manufactured by Martin Dow, is a potent antibiotic cream containing Fusidic Acid 2% w/w. Fusidic acid exhibits remarkable antibacterial activity, particularly against various gram-positive organisms. Notably, Staphylococci, even those resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics, are highly susceptible to fusidic acid. Fusidic acid, chemically known as (17Z)16β(Acetyloxy)3β,19dihydroxy4β,8,14trimethyl18nor5β,10αcholesta17(20),24dien21oic acid hemihydrate, is an antimicrobial compound produced through the cultivation of specific strains of Fusiderm coccineous

Composition:

Each gram of Fusiderm Cream contains:

Fusidic Acid (BP): 2% w/w

Therapeutic Indications:

Fusiderm Cream is indicated for the treatment of both primary and secondary skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp, and Corynebacterium minutissimum. Primary skin infections encompass conditions like impetigo contagions and erythrismal, while secondary skin infections include infected wounds and burns

Clinical Pharmacology:

Fusidic acid, in addition to targeting Staphylococci, also demonstrates activity against other bacterial species such as various Corynebacterial spp, Neisseria spp, Clostridia spp, and Bacteroides spp

Mechanism of Action:

Fusidic acid acts by inhibiting protein synthesis, interfering with the transfer of amino acids from aminoacyl RNA to protein on the ribosomes

Pharmacokinetics:

Fusidic acid can permeate intact human skin, with the extent of penetration influenced by factors such as exposure duration and skin condition. It is primarily excreted in bile, with minimal excretion in urine

Dosage and Administration:

For uncovered lesions, apply a small amount of Fusidic acid cream 3 or 4 times daily. In the case of covered lesions, less frequent applications (1 or 2 times daily) may be appropriate

Contraindications:

Fusiderm Cream should not be used in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of its components

Warnings & Precautions:

  • Prolonged or recurrent use may elevate the risk of antibiotic resistance and contact sensitization
  • When applying the cream to the face, take care to avoid contact with the eyes, as some components may cause conjunctival irritation
  • Use during pregnancy should be cautious and determined by assessing the benefit to the mother against potential risks to the developing baby

Overdosage:

Overdosing with Fusidic acid cream is unlikely

Adverse Effects:

Hypersensitivity reactions and angioedema may occur

Stability:

Please refer to the expiry date on the packaging for product stability

FAQs

Is a prescription required for Fusiderm Cream?

Yes. Fusiderm Cream contains Fusidic Acid 2%, a prescription-only topical antibiotic. It is sold only on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner.

What is Fusidic Acid and how does it work in Fusiderm Cream?

Fusidic Acid is an antimicrobial compound that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis — specifically by blocking the transfer of amino acids from aminoacyl-RNA to protein on the ribosomes. It is especially active against gram-positive bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, even strains resistant to penicillin.

How long should I use Fusiderm Cream?

For most skin infections, approximately 7 days of treatment is standard. Do not extend use beyond what is prescribed, as prolonged antibiotic use may increase the risk of resistance and skin sensitization.

What infections does Fusiderm Cream treat?

Fusiderm Cream treats both primary skin infections (impetigo contagiosa, erythrasma) and secondary skin infections where susceptible bacteria have colonized wounds or burns. It is particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and Corynebacterium minutissimum.
