Nexum 40mg contains Esomeprazole 40mg, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) made by Getz Pharma. Esomeprazole reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces, which relieves burning and reflux and gives an inflamed or ulcerated stomach lining the chance to heal.
Esomeprazole is the refined form of omeprazole. It is not the same molecule — esomeprazole is the S-isomer, and it is broken down by the liver more slowly, so acid control tends to be steadier over 24 hours.
What Nexum 40mg is used for
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — heartburn, acid coming up into the throat
- Erosive oesophagitis — where acid has damaged the food pipe lining

How it works
Esomeprazole blocks the proton pump (the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme) in the acid-producing cells of the stomach wall. This is the final step in acid production, so blocking it reduces acid regardless of what triggered it — food, stress or medicines.
Directions for use (as prescribed)
- The usual adult dose is one 40mg capsule once a day.
- Take it at least one hour before food, usually in the morning — PPIs work best on an empty stomach.
- Swallow whole with water. Do not chew or crush.
- Complete the course your doctor sets, even if the burning stops earlier. Ulcer courses commonly run 4 to 8 weeks.
- Do not take it long term without review — your doctor should reassess the need periodically.
Important precautions

- Long-term use can reduce absorption of vitamin B12 and magnesium, and has been linked to a small increase in fracture risk
