Ocumox Eye Ointment contains moxifloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, in a sterile 3.5g ophthalmic ointment. It treats bacterial infections of the eye by stopping the bacteria from copying their DNA, which halts their growth and clears the infection.
Unlike drops, an ointment stays on the eye surface far longer, so the antibiotic keeps working through the night. That makes it useful for stubborn infections and for children, who often blink drops straight out.
What Ocumox Eye Ointment is used for
- Bacterial conjunctivitis — red, sticky, discharging eye
- Corneal ulcers caused by susceptible bacteria
- Blepharitis — infected, crusted eyelid margins
- Preventing infection after eye surgery or injury, where prescribed
Directions for use (as prescribed)
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying.
- Tilt the head back and pull the lower eyelid down to make a small pocket.
- Apply a thin strip of ointment, about 1 cm, inside the lower eyelid. Do not let the tube tip touch the eye, eyelid or fingers.
- Close the eye gently for one to two minutes and roll the eyeball to spread the ointment.
- Usually applied two to three times a day, or as your ophthalmologist directs.
- Complete the full course even if the eye looks better — stopping early lets the infection return.
Important precautions
- Vision will be blurred for a few minutes after application — do not drive or ride until it clears
- Mild stinging, burning or a gritty feeling can occur and usually settles quickly
- Do not wear contact lenses during treatment for a bacterial eye infection
- Not for viral or fungal eye infections — an antibiotic will not help those
- Stop and see your doctor if there is a rash, swelling of the eyelid, or the eye becomes more painful
- Discard the tube four weeks after opening. Never share eye medicines.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
