Description

Pequit 100mg Tablets — Quetiapine Fumarate (Immediate Release)

Pequit 100mg Tablets contain Quetiapine Fumarate, a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic that acts as a multi-receptor antagonist — primarily blocking dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. Its antihistamine (H1) activity accounts for strong sedation, while alpha-1 adrenergic blockade can cause orthostatic hypotension — dose titration is recommended.

Approved Clinical Indications

  • Schizophrenia — controls positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions) and negative symptoms (flat affect, social withdrawal)
  • Bipolar I Disorder — acute manic and mixed episodes
  • Bipolar Depression — depressive episodes in bipolar I and II
  • Adjunct treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) — when added to antidepressant therapy

Important Clinical Notes & Monitoring

  • Metabolic monitoring: Weigh patients at baseline; monitor blood glucose, HbA1c, and lipid panel every 3–6 months — quetiapine carries metabolic risk (weight gain, diabetes, dyslipidaemia).
  • QTc prolongation: Monitor ECG at baseline and if cardiac risk factors are present.
  • Cataract monitoring: Lens changes reported — ophthalmologic examination recommended for long-term use.
  • Orthostatic hypotension: Titrate dose slowly; advise patient to rise slowly. Especially important in elderly patients.
  • Tardive dyskinesia: Risk increases with long-term use — assess periodically.
  • Sedation: Marked antihistamine-mediated sedation — avoid alcohol and CNS depressants.

Usage & Benefits
  • Schizophrenia management: Controls positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions) and negative symptoms (flat affect, withdrawal)
  • Bipolar disorder: Effective for both manic and depressive episodes in bipolar I and II
  • Adjunct MDD: Can be added to antidepressant therapy for treatment-resistant depression under specialist supervision
  • Reduced EPS risk: Lower extrapyramidal side effect burden vs. first-generation antipsychotics
  • Flexible dosing: 100mg is a common titration target; dose adjusted per clinical response and tolerability
How To Use

Take exactly as prescribed by your psychiatrist. Dose titration is essential — do not self-adjust. Take with or without food; if sedation is problematic, evening dosing may be preferred. Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants. Do not stop suddenly — discuss any discontinuation with your prescriber. Report any unusual muscle movements, significant weight gain, or vision changes promptly. Blood glucose, lipids, and weight should be monitored at baseline and regularly during treatment.

FAQs

What is Pequit 100mg used for?

Quetiapine 100mg is prescribed for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (mania and depression), and as an adjunct for major depressive disorder under specialist supervision.

What metabolic monitoring is required with Quetiapine?

Monitor weight, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, and lipid panel at baseline and every 3–6 months — quetiapine carries a class risk for metabolic syndrome.

Why is an eye examination recommended?

Quetiapine has been associated with lens changes (cataracts) in long-term use. Ophthalmologic examination at baseline and annually is recommended for patients on prolonged therapy.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Pequit 100mg?

No. Alcohol significantly increases CNS depression and sedation with quetiapine. Avoid alcohol entirely during treatment.
