Description
Piozer 45mg Tablet (Pioglitazone)
Piozer 45mg Tablet contains Pioglitazone 45mg, the maximum approved oral dose of this thiazolidinedione (TZD) antidiabetic agent. It is used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus when lower doses (15mg or 30mg) have not achieved adequate glycaemic control. Pioglitazone acts as an agonist of PPAR-gamma receptors in adipose tissue and muscle, improving insulin sensitivity and reducing fasting blood glucose levels.
Piozer 45mg is commonly prescribed in combination with Metformin, Sitagliptin, or Sulfonylureas for optimised diabetes management. It helps lower the long-term risk of diabetic complications including kidney failure, peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy, and major cardiovascular events.
Important Safety Information
- Bladder cancer risk: Prolonged use (>1 year) is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Report haematuria, dysuria, or urinary frequency immediately.
- Heart failure: Pioglitazone causes dose-dependent fluid retention, which can precipitate or worsen heart failure. Contraindicated in NYHA Class III/IV heart failure.
- Fluid retention/oedema: Monitor for peripheral and pulmonary oedema, particularly in patients with cardiac or renal disease.
- Bone fracture risk: Long-term use is associated with increased fracture risk, particularly in female patients. Evaluate bone health before initiation.
- Weight gain: Dose-dependent weight gain is expected; monitor BMI and advise dietary adjustments.
- Hepatotoxicity: Rare but reported; check liver function if jaundice or elevated enzymes are suspected.
- Macular oedema: Monitor for visual changes; refer for ophthalmological evaluation if symptoms develop.
