Piozer Plus 15/500mg Tablet is a fixed-dose combination of Pioglitazone 15mg and Metformin HCl 500mg indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Pioglitazone improves insulin sensitivity via PPAR-gamma activation, while Metformin decreases hepatic gluconeogenesis and enhances peripheral glucose uptake — providing complementary, dual-mechanism glycaemic control.
This combination is prescribed when Metformin monotherapy is insufficient. It helps reduce HbA1c and lowers the risk of long-term diabetic complications. Take with meals to minimise gastrointestinal side effects from Metformin.
Important Safety Information — Pioglitazone Component
- Bladder cancer risk: Prolonged Pioglitazone use (>1 year) is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Report haematuria or urinary symptoms immediately.
- Heart failure: Fluid retention can precipitate or worsen cardiac failure. Contraindicated in NYHA Class III/IV heart failure.
- Fluid retention/oedema: Monitor for oedema particularly in cardiac and renal patients.
- Bone fracture risk: Increased fracture risk in women on long-term Pioglitazone therapy.

- Lactic acidosis: A rare but serious risk, particularly in patients with renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min). Withhold before iodinated contrast procedures and resume only after renal function is confirmed stable.
- GI side effects: Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea are common, especially on initiation. Always take with food to minimise these effects.
