Description
Piozer Plus 15/850mg Tablet (Pioglitazone + Metformin)
Piozer Plus 15/850mg Tablet is a fixed-dose combination of Pioglitazone 15mg and Metformin HCl 850mg prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The higher Metformin dose provides a stronger reduction in hepatic gluconeogenesis and intestinal glucose absorption, while Pioglitazone enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity for comprehensive glycaemic control.
This formulation is recommended as a second-line therapy when Metformin monotherapy at standard doses fails to maintain target HbA1c levels. It is an effective and well-established combination for patients requiring intensified oral antidiabetic therapy.
Important Safety Information — Pioglitazone Component
- Bladder cancer risk: Prolonged use (>1 year) is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Report haematuria, dysuria, or unexplained urinary symptoms immediately.
- Heart failure: Pioglitazone causes fluid retention and can precipitate cardiac failure. Contraindicated in NYHA Class III/IV heart failure.
- Fluid retention/oedema: Monitor for peripheral oedema, especially in patients with cardiovascular or renal disease.
- Bone fracture risk: Long-term use is associated with increased fracture risk, particularly in female patients.
Important Safety Information — Metformin Component
- Lactic acidosis: Rare but potentially fatal. Risk is elevated in renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min), hepatic disease, excessive alcohol use, and dehydration. Withhold before iodinated contrast administration and resume only after renal function is verified adequate.
- GI side effects: Nausea, diarrhoea, and abdominal discomfort are common particularly on initiation. Always take with food.
- Renal monitoring: Assess eGFR prior to starting therapy and at regular intervals.

How To Use
Take as directed by your physician. Always take with meals to reduce Metformin-related gastrointestinal side effects (nausea, diarrhoea). Do not crush or chew the tablet. Do not stop therapy suddenly without medical advice. Withhold before iodinated contrast procedures. Monitor renal function and blood glucose regularly. Prescription required — not for self-medication.
FAQs
What is Piozer Plus 15/850mg used for?
It is prescribed for type 2 diabetes when standard-dose Metformin alone cannot maintain target HbA1c. The 850mg Metformin dose provides stronger glucose-lowering action alongside Pioglitazone's insulin sensitisation.
What are the risks of lactic acidosis with Metformin 850mg?
Lactic acidosis is rare but potentially fatal, particularly in renal impairment (eGFR below 30 mL/min), hepatic disease, and excessive alcohol use. Withhold before contrast procedures and resume only after renal function is confirmed stable.
Does Pioglitazone in this tablet cause heart failure risk?
Yes. Pioglitazone causes fluid retention which can precipitate cardiac failure. It is contraindicated in NYHA Class III/IV heart failure. Patients with cardiac or renal impairment must be monitored closely.
Can Piozer Plus 15/850mg cause bladder cancer?
Prolonged Pioglitazone use (greater than 1 year) is associated with a small increased bladder cancer risk. Report any haematuria or unexplained urinary symptoms to your doctor without delay.
