About Vmed 5/160mg Tablets

Vmed 5/160mg Tablets are a fixed-dose combination of Amlodipine Besilate 5mg and Valsartan 160mg, offering a higher-strength ARB dose than the 5/80mg formulation. This combination is prescribed for adults with moderate to severe essential hypertension or those whose blood pressure remains inadequately controlled on lower doses of either agent.

Amlodipine (CCB) dilates peripheral arteries by inhibiting calcium ion entry into vascular smooth muscle, while Valsartan 160mg (ARB) provides stronger angiotensin II blockade — together delivering powerful, sustained blood pressure reduction. The higher Valsartan dose also confers additional cardiovascular and renal protection. Key warnings: Valsartan is contraindicated in pregnancy (fetotoxic); do not use in the second or third trimester. Monitor for hyperkalaemia (especially in patients with renal impairment or on potassium-sparing diuretics). Amlodipine may cause dose-related ankle oedema. Attend regular blood pressure and kidney function monitoring. For hypertension products, see our anti-hypertensive collection.

Key Benefits

  • Higher-dose Valsartan (160mg) for stronger, sustained hypertension control
  • Dual CCB + ARB mechanism provides comprehensive cardiovascular protection
  • Reduces risk of stroke, heart attack, and hypertensive kidney disease
  • Once-daily tablet simplifies treatment adherence for long-term BP management
  • Suitable for patients requiring more aggressive antihypertensive therapy

How to Use

  1. Take one Vmed 5/160mg tablet once daily as prescribed by your doctor.
  2. Swallow with water — can be taken with or without food at a consistent time.
  3. Monitor your blood pressure regularly and attend all follow-up appointments.
  4. Do not stop abruptly — taper under medical supervision if discontinuation is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is Vmed 5/160mg preferred over 5/80mg?
A: The 5/160mg formulation is used when 5/80mg does not achieve adequate blood pressure control, or when the patient's hypertension is more severe and requires stronger ARB activity.

Q: Can Vmed 5/160mg cause kidney problems?
A: Valsartan actually protects the kidneys in most patients, but can raise potassium in patients with pre-existing renal impairment. Regular kidney function monitoring is recommended.

Q: Is this medication safe during breastfeeding?
A: Valsartan is not recommended during breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for a safe alternative. For more antihypertensive options, visit our general medicines collection.
