Dandruff — those white or yellow flakes and an itchy scalp — is extremely common and very treatable. The trick is using the right active ingredient and using it correctly.
What causes dandruff?
- Malassezia, a yeast that lives on the scalp and can trigger flaking.
- Seborrheic dermatitis — a more inflamed, oily, scaly form.
- Dry scalp, product build-up, or infrequent washing.
The active ingredients that clear it
- Ketoconazole — an antifungal, one of the most effective for stubborn dandruff.
- Zinc pyrithione — antifungal/antibacterial, gentle for regular use.
- Selenium sulfide — reduces flaking and yeast.
- Salicylic acid — lifts away scale and build-up.

How to use an anti-dandruff shampoo correctly
Most people don’t leave it on long enough. Massage into the scalp (not just the hair) and leave it on for 3–5 minutes before rinsing, so the active can work. Use it 2–3 times a week until controlled, then once a week to maintain. Rotating between two different actives can help if one stops working.
When to see a dermatologist
If your scalp is very inflamed, painful, bleeding, or doesn’t improve after a few weeks of correct use, see a dermatologist — it may be seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or another condition that needs prescription treatment.
