Description

Adapco Gel — Adapalene 0.1% (Standard Strength) | Prescription Retinoid Gel for Acne

Prescription required. Adapco Gel by Atco Pharma contains Adapalene BP 0.1% w/w — the standard-strength, first-line topical retinoid gel for acne vulgaris. Adapalene is a third-generation naphthoic acid derivative that normalises follicular keratinisation and reduces microcomedone formation. Better tolerated than first-generation retinoids, making it ideal for acne-prone patients starting retinoid therapy. Indicated for patients aged 12 and above.

Composition

Each gram contains: Adapalene BP 1mg (0.1% w/w) in gel base.

Mechanism of Action

Adapalene selectively binds to nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RAR-beta and RAR-gamma), modulating follicular epithelial cell differentiation and keratinisation, and inhibiting inflammatory mediators. This reduces microcomedone formation — the root of all acne lesion types.

Indications

  • Acne vulgaris — comedonal, papular, and pustular forms
  • Patients aged 12 years and above

Dosage and Administration

  1. Gently cleanse the face with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser; pat dry.
  2. Apply a thin film once daily at night to the entire affected area.
  3. Avoid the eye area, lips, nostrils, and mucous membranes.
  4. Do not apply to cuts, abrasions, eczematous, or sunburned skin.
  5. If no improvement after 12 weeks, consult your dermatologist for re-evaluation.

Important: Sun Protection Required

Apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning. Adapalene increases photosensitivity. Browse our sun protection & SPF range.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Prescription-only — use under dermatologist guidance only.
  • Avoid concurrent use with other irritating topical products.
  • Avoid waxing on treated skin areas.
  • Not recommended for children under 12.
  • Pregnancy Category C — consult your doctor before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Discontinue if hypersensitivity or severe irritation occurs.

Adverse Effects

Erythema, scaling, dryness, pruritus, burning, and stinging may occur — particularly in early weeks. Usually transient and manageable.

Storage

Do not store above 30°C. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.

Usage & Benefits
  • Adapalene 0.1% (standard USP strength): Third-generation retinoid with well-established efficacy and improved tolerability vs first-generation retinoids
  • Normalises follicular keratinisation: Prevents microcomedone formation — the underlying cause of all acne lesion types (comedones, papules, pustules)
  • Selective RAR binding: Binds nuclear retinoic acid receptors specifically, modulating cell differentiation and inflammation without cytosolic receptor binding — less irritating than tretinoin
  • Anti-inflammatory: Inhibits inflammatory cascade mediators, reducing redness and papule/pustule severity
  • Suitable entry-level retinoid for first-time retinoid users or patients with sensitive skin (vs 0.3% Forte)
  • Once-nightly application; clinical improvement typically seen from 8–12 weeks
How To Use

2. Apply a thin film of Adapco Gel to acne-affected skin areas once daily at night.
3. Avoid the eye area, lips, nostrils, and mucous membranes.
4. Do not apply to cuts, abrasions, eczematous, or sunburned skin.
5. Apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning — adapalene increases photosensitivity.
6. Avoid waxing on adapalene-treated skin.
7. If no improvement after 12 weeks, consult your dermatologist for re-evaluation.
8. Do not store above 30°C. Protect from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
9. For external use only.

FAQs

Does Adapco Gel require a prescription?

Yes. Adapco Gel contains Adapalene, a topical retinoid, and is a prescription-only medicine. Always use under dermatologist supervision.

What is the difference between Adapco Gel (0.1%) and Adapco Forte Gel (0.3%)?

Adapco Gel is the standard 0.1% strength — the first-line option for most acne patients and those new to retinoids. Adapco Forte at 0.3% is prescribed for moderate-to-severe acne or when 0.1% proves insufficient. Your dermatologist will advise the right strength.

How long does Adapco Gel take to show results?

Expect gradual improvement over 8–12 weeks of consistent nightly use. An initial purging phase (temporary increase in breakouts) in the first 2–4 weeks is common with retinoids.

Must I use sunscreen with Adapco Gel?

Yes — essential. Adapalene increases skin photosensitivity. Use SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

Can Adapco Gel be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Adapalene is Pregnancy Category C. Safety in pregnancy is not established. Use with caution during breastfeeding. Consult your doctor.

What age group can use Adapco Gel?

Indicated for patients aged 12 years and above. Not recommended for children under 12.
