How To Use
High-strength retinol (1%) — read carefully before use.
1. PM use only. Retinol degrades in UV light and increases photosensitivity — never use in the morning.
2. Start slowly: apply 1–2 times per week for the first 4 weeks. 1% is a HIGH concentration — be conservative.
3. Apply to clean, completely dry skin. Wait 10–20 minutes after cleansing before applying retinol.
4. Dispense a pea-sized amount and spread gently across the face and neck, avoiding the eyes, lips, and nostrils.
5. Allow to fully absorb before applying a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser on top.
6. Do not layer with high-strength AHAs, BHAs, or other retinoids on the same evening.
7. Morning after: SPF 30+ is absolutely mandatory — your skin is significantly more sensitive to UV.
Safety warnings:
— Dermatologist supervision is strongly recommended, especially for beginners and those with sensitive skin.
— Retinisation side effects (redness, peeling, dryness, flaking) are expected during the adjustment phase and typically resolve within 4–6 weeks.
— Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
— Patch test before first full-face application.
— If severe irritation or persistent redness occurs, reduce frequency or discontinue and consult a dermatologist.
FAQs
Is 1% retinol suitable for retinol beginners?
1% is a high concentration of retinol. Beginners are strongly advised to start with a lower strength (0.2–0.5%) and work up gradually. If you choose to begin at 1%, start with once per week and increase slowly. Dermatologist guidance is strongly recommended.
What is retinisation and what should I expect?
Retinisation (also called retinol purging) refers to the initial skin adjustment period where redness, peeling, dryness, and flaking can occur. This is a normal response to retinol as your skin adapts to accelerated cell turnover. It typically lasts 4–6 weeks and improves significantly thereafter.
Can I use Bionnex Retinol 1% every night?
Not immediately. Start at 1–2 times per week and increase slowly over several weeks based on how your skin tolerates it. Daily use at 1% is only appropriate for experienced retinol users after a full acclimatisation period.
Can I use this serum during pregnancy?
No. Retinol and all retinoids (including topical) are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not use during this time.
Can I combine Bionnex Retinol 1% with AHA or BHA exfoliants?
Do not use high-strength AHAs or BHAs in the same evening routine as retinol — this combination significantly increases irritation risk. If using both, alternate evenings, and always consult a dermatologist before combining strong actives.
