Blokium 100mg contains Atenolol 100mg, a cardioselective beta-blocker, and is the highest of the three Blokium strengths. It blocks the effect of adrenaline on the heart, slowing the rate and reducing the force of each beat, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart's workload.
What Blokium 100mg is used for
- High blood pressure (hypertension) not controlled by lower doses
- Angina — preventing chest pain on exertion
- Long-term heart protection, including after a heart attack
- Certain fast or irregular heart rhythms
Directions for use (as prescribed)
- The usual dose at this strength is one tablet once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food.
- 100mg is normally reached by stepping up from 25mg or 50mg, not started straight away.
- Never stop suddenly. Abruptly stopping a beta-blocker can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure, chest pain or a heart attack. The dose must be reduced gradually by your doctor.
- If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next one is close — never double up.
