Brivace 50mg Tablets – Brivaracetam for Epilepsy & Seizure Control

Brivace 50mg Tablets contain Brivaracetam 50mg — the standard recommended starting and maintenance dose for adjunct treatment of partial-onset (focal) seizures. As a high-affinity SV2A ligand with superior CNS penetration, Brivaracetam provides reliable seizure control with fewer neuropsychiatric side effects than levetiracetam in some patients.

What is Brivace 50mg?

Brivace 50mg Tablets contain Brivaracetam 50mg — a third-generation antiepileptic drug manufactured by Hilton Pharma. The 50mg strength represents the standard recommended starting dose (50mg twice daily = 100mg/day) for most adult patients initiating Brivaracetam therapy. It is indicated for adjunct treatment of partial-onset (focal) seizures in adults and adolescents ≥16 years. This is a prescription-only (Rx) medicine.

How Does Brivace Work?

Brivaracetam selectively binds synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) with approximately 15–30-fold higher affinity than levetiracetam. SV2A is a membrane glycoprotein on synaptic vesicles that plays a critical role in regulating neurotransmitter release. By modulating SV2A, Brivaracetam reduces the abnormal synchronous burst-firing of overactive neurons that generates focal seizures. Its superior CNS penetration compared to levetiracetam enables faster onset and more potent seizure suppression at equivalent doses.

Uses of Brivace 50mg

Brivace 50mg is the standard dose for adjunct therapy of partial-onset (focal) seizures, with or without secondary generalisation, in patients ≥16 years. It is suitable for patients inadequately controlled on other AEDs and as a switching option for patients who experienced psychiatric/behavioural side effects with levetiracetam.

Dosage & Administration

Standard dose: 50mg twice daily (total 100mg/day). Dose may be decreased to 25mg twice daily or increased to 100mg twice daily based on response and tolerability, as directed by your neurologist. Take with or without food. Swallow tablets whole — do not crush or chew. Do not stop suddenly — always taper under neurologist supervision to prevent breakthrough seizures.

Side Effects

Common: somnolence, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting. Neuropsychiatric adverse effects (irritability, anxiety, aggression) occur at lower rates than with levetiracetam, which is a clinically meaningful difference in some patients. Monitor closely for mood changes, depression, and suicidal ideation — a risk that applies to all antiepileptic drugs. Promptly report any significant behavioural changes to your neurologist.

Precautions

Never stop Brivace abruptly — sudden discontinuation can precipitate seizures. Reduce dose in moderate-to-severe hepatic impairment. Not recommended for children under 16 years for this indication. Patients should not drive or operate machinery until seizure control is well established and the drug's sedative effects are known. This is an Rx medicine — use only under neurological supervision.
