Dapsone 5% Gel: Effective Topical Treatment for Acne Vulgaris

Composition

Each gram of DAPSONE GEL contains Dapsone 50 mg (5% w/w).

Indications

Dapsone Gel 5% is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.

Dosage & Administration

After the skin is gently washed and patted dry, apply approximately a pea-sized amount of Dapsone Gel 5% to the acne-affected areas twice daily. Gently rub it in. If there is no improvement after 12 weeks, treatment should be reassessed.

Adverse Effects

Dapsone Gel 5% may cause serious side effects, including:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Methemoglobinemia (contact a doctor immediately if lips, nail beds or the inside of your mouth turn grey or blue)
  • Dark brown urine
  • Anaemia (back pain, fever, yellow or pale skin)

Warnings & Precautions

  • If there is no improvement after 12 weeks, treatment should be reassessed.
  • Common side effects include oiliness, peeling, dryness and redness of the treated skin.
  • Methemoglobinemia risk, especially in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
  • Although peripheral neuropathy is a risk with oral Dapsone, it is not a concern with topical Dapsone Gel 5%.
  • Reports have emerged of skin reactions including toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme and others.

Drug Interactions

  • Potential interactions with rifampin, anticonvulsants, St. John's Wort and related drugs.
  • Interaction with drugs that induce methemoglobinemia.

Fertility, Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy: Limited data available; consult a doctor.
  • Lactation: Minimal systemic absorption; effects on breastfed infants unknown.
  • Pediatric Use: Not recommended for children under 12.
  • Geriatric Use: Limited data for patients aged 65 and over.
