MUPIDERM Ointment: Your Solution for Impetigo Treatment

MUPIDERM Ointment, containing 2% Mupirocin, is a topical
antibiotic medication designed to effectively treat impetigo. In this
comprehensive description, we will delve into the composition, indications,
dosage, precautions, adverse reactions, and more to provide a thorough
understanding of MUPIDERM Ointment.

Composition:

Mupiderm Ointment
contains Mupirocin 2% w/w in a neutral base.

Indications and Usage:

MUPIDERM Ointment is
indicated for the topical treatment of impetigo caused by susceptible strains
of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes).

Dosage and Administration:

  • For Topical Use Only
  • Apply a small amount
of MUPIDERM Ointment to the affected area three times daily for up to 10 days
  • A cotton swab or
gauze pad can be used for application, and a gauze dressing may be applied if
    desired
  • Reevaluate patients
who do not show a clinical response within 3 to 5 days

Overdosage:

  • Overdose with
Mupirocin is rare, and its toxicity is very low
  • In the event of
accidental ingestion, symptomatic treatment should be administered
  • There is no specific
    treatment for Mupirocin overdose

Adverse Reactions

Local adverse
reactions reported in clinical trials include burning, stinging, pain (1.5% of
subjects), and itching (1% of subjects).

Less common reactions
(less than 1%) include rash, nausea, erythema, dry skin, tenderness, swelling,
contact dermatitis, and increased exudate.

Use in Specific Populations:

Pregnancy: Limited
human data; minimal systemic absorption through intact skin; no developmental
toxicity observed in animal studies.

Mupirocin's minimal systemic absorption in humans makes exposure to breastfed
children unlikely; benefits of breastfeeding should be considered.

Pediatric Use: Safety
and effectiveness established in ages 2 months to 16 years for impetigo
treatment.

Nonclinical Toxicology:

  • No longterm
    carcinogenicity studies conducted

FAQs

What is Mupiderm Ointment used for?

It is a prescription topical antibiotic for impetigo and other superficial skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Is Mupiderm a steroid?

No. Mupirocin is an antibiotic, not a corticosteroid. It treats bacterial infection but does not reduce non-infectious inflammation.

How long should I use Mupiderm?

Usually three times daily for up to 10 days. Do not extend treatment beyond what your doctor advises, as prolonged use can encourage resistant bacteria.

Can it be used in children, pregnancy or breastfeeding?

It is established as safe and effective for impetigo in children from 2 months to 16 years. Systemic absorption through intact skin is minimal; discuss use in pregnancy or breastfeeding with your doctor.

What side effects should I watch for?

Local burning, stinging, pain or itching at the application site are most common. Less common are rash, erythema, dry skin, swelling and contact dermatitis. Stop and consult your doctor if a rash, severe irritation or allergic reaction occurs.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Mupiderm Ointment must be dispensed on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner.
