What is Vepridone 1mg?

Vepridone 1mg Tablets contain Risperidone 1mg, an atypical antipsychotic that blocks dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. Risperidone is indicated for schizophrenia, acute mania in bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder in adolescents. The 1mg strength is the lowest oral dose, commonly used for dose initiation or in patients requiring careful titration.

How Does Vepridone 1mg Work?

Risperidone antagonises D2 receptors in the mesolimbic pathway (reducing positive psychotic symptoms) and 5-HT2A receptors in the prefrontal cortex (improving negative symptoms and reducing EPS risk compared to typical antipsychotics). Among atypical antipsychotics, risperidone produces the highest prolactin elevation. EPS risk increases with dose; 1mg is associated with minimal EPS in most patients.

Uses of Vepridone 1mg

Indicated for: acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia; acute manic episodes in bipolar I disorder (alone or with mood stabiliser/lithium/valproate); irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents aged 5–16 years. Useful as a low starting dose when titrating risperidone therapy. For higher strengths, see also Vepridone 2mg.

Dosage & Administration

Adults (schizophrenia): Start 2mg/day (may use 1mg twice daily); target dose 4–6mg/day; maximum 16mg/day. Elderly/renal/hepatic impairment: start 0.5mg twice daily. Administer once or twice daily with or without food. Titrate gradually based on response and tolerability. Do not stop abruptly without physician guidance.

Side Effects

Common: insomnia, agitation, headache, somnolence, dizziness, and constipation. EPS (extrapyramidal symptoms) including akathisia, tremor, and rigidity — risk increases with dose. Prolactin elevation is prominent: may cause galactorrhoea, menstrual irregularities, and sexual dysfunction. Metabolic effects: weight gain, hyperglycaemia, dyslipidaemia. QTc prolongation has been reported.

Precautions

Monitor weight, fasting glucose, and lipids at baseline and periodically. Use caution in cardiovascular disease, QTc-prolonging medications, diabetes, or Parkinson's disease. Not recommended in dementia-related psychosis (increased mortality risk). Avoid abrupt discontinuation. Prescription only (Rx). Consult your psychiatrist before initiating or adjusting therapy. Also available: Vepridone 3mg and higher strengths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is the 1mg dose used instead of higher strengths?
A: The 1mg strength is used for dose initiation, elderly patients, or those with renal/hepatic impairment to minimise side effects during titration.

Q: Does Vepridone 1mg cause weight gain?
A: Weight gain is a known risperidone class effect. Monitor weight regularly; dietary and lifestyle adjustments are recommended.

Q: Is Vepridone 1mg prescription-only in Pakistan?
A: Yes. Risperidone is a prescription-only antipsychotic (Rx). A valid prescription from a psychiatrist or physician is required.

How To Use

Take Vepridone 1mg once or twice daily as directed by your psychiatrist. The usual adult target dose for schizophrenia is 4–6mg/day. Starting at 1mg allows slow titration to minimise side effects. Can be taken with or without food. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice. Prescription required.
