Some hair fall is normal (we shed 50–100 hairs a day). But sudden or heavy shedding, a widening part, or a receding hairline are worth acting on early — the sooner you start, the better the results.
Common causes
- Genetics (male/female pattern hair loss) — the most common cause.
- Nutritional deficiencies (iron, vitamin D, biotin).
- Stress, illness or post-fever shedding (telogen effluvium).
- Scalp conditions like dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.
Evidence-based options
The most studied treatments include minoxidil, ketoconazole shampoo, and certain supplements (e.g. biotin). Some treatments are prescription-only and not suitable for everyone — please speak to a doctor or dermatologist about what’s right for you and the correct way to use it. We don’t recommend self-prescribing dosages.

Daily habits that help
- Be gentle — avoid tight hairstyles and aggressive towel-drying.
- Wash regularly with a suitable shampoo; keep the scalp healthy (treat dandruff if present).
- Eat a balanced, protein-rich diet; address any deficiencies with your doctor.
- Manage stress and sleep — both affect the hair cycle.
When to see a doctor
See a dermatologist or trichologist if you have sudden heavy shedding, bald patches, scalp pain or itching, or no improvement after a few months. Early diagnosis gives the best chance of regrowth, and a professional can confirm the cause and the safest treatment.
