Combigan Eye Drops 5ml – Brimonidine & Timolol for Glaucoma Treatment

Combigan Eye Drops 5ml combine Brimonidine Tartrate 0.2% (alpha-2 adrenergic agonist) and Timolol Maleate 0.5% (non-selective beta-blocker) as Rx dual therapy to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Brimonidine reduces aqueous humour production and enhances uveoscleral outflow; Timolol reduces aqueous humour formation via beta-blockade. Together they lower IOP more effectively than monotherapy, protecting the optic nerve from progressive damage and vision loss.

  • Rx dual mechanism: alpha-2 agonist + beta-blocker for superior IOP reduction
  • Indicated for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension in adults
  • Caution in patients with severe cardiac or respiratory disease (beta-blocker effect of Timolol)
  • Side effects: eye discomfort, dry eyes, blurred vision, conjunctival hyperaemia

FAQs

Why do Combigan Eye Drops require a prescription?

Combigan contains Timolol, a beta-blocker that can cause systemic cardiovascular and respiratory effects (bradycardia, bronchospasm). Brimonidine also has systemic absorption. Medical supervision ensures safe use, particularly in patients with heart or lung disease.

How often should Combigan be used?

Typically twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart, as prescribed by your ophthalmologist. Do not use more frequently than directed.

What are the common side effects of Combigan Eye Drops?

Eye discomfort, blurred vision, dry eyes, conjunctival hyperaemia (redness), eye pain, and headache. Rare systemic effects include bradycardia and bronchospasm — report any breathing difficulty or slow pulse immediately.
