Lumigan 0.03% Eye Drops – Bimatoprost Ophthalmic Solution for Glaucoma

Lumigan 0.03% Eye Drops contain bimatoprost, a synthetic prostamide (prostaglandin analogue) that lowers elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) by increasing uveoscleral and trabecular outflow of aqueous humour from the eye. Reducing IOP is the primary therapeutic goal in managing open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, conditions in which sustained high pressure can damage the optic nerve and lead to progressive, irreversible vision loss if untreated.

Lumigan 0.03% is applied once daily in the evening to the affected eye(s) as directed by an ophthalmologist. Consistent evening dosing maximises IOP reduction. Patients should be counselled on proper instillation technique, the risk of periorbital hyperpigmentation with long-term use, and the importance of not discontinuing therapy without specialist review.

Lumigan must be used strictly under ophthalmic supervision. It is not suitable for use in children under 18, patients with active intraocular inflammation, or those with known hypersensitivity to bimatoprost or any excipient. Regular IOP measurements and optic nerve assessments are recommended during therapy.

How To Use

1. Wash hands thoroughly before handling the eye drop bottle.
2. Tilt head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small conjunctival pocket.
3. Instil one drop of Lumigan 0.03% into the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening.
4. After instillation, close the eye gently and apply light pressure at the inner corner (nasolacrimal occlusion) for 1–2 minutes to minimise systemic absorption.
5. Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye, eyelid, or any surface — replace cap immediately after use. Store at 2–25°C.

FAQs

What is Lumigan 0.03% used for?

To reduce elevated intraocular pressure in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, thereby protecting the optic nerve.

How does bimatoprost work?

Bimatoprost increases the outflow of aqueous humour from the eye via uveoscleral and trabecular pathways, reducing intraocular pressure.

Is a prescription required?

Yes. Lumigan 0.03% is a prescription-only ophthalmic medication — always use under ophthalmologist supervision.

Why apply in the evening?

Evening dosing achieves the maximum IOP-lowering effect during the peak pressure period and provides consistent 24-hour coverage.

What side effects should I watch for?

Common effects include conjunctival hyperaemia (redness) and eyelash changes. Long-term use may cause periorbital pigmentation. Report any vision changes or severe eye irritation to your ophthalmologist promptly.
