Miro 2.5mg contains Mirogabalin besylate 2.5mg, a newer-generation alpha-2-delta (α2δ) ligand for neuropathic pain — the burning, shooting, tingling or electric-shock pain that comes from damaged nerves rather than from injured tissue. Miro is made by Nabiqasim and comes in three strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg.
The 2.5mg tablet is the smallest strength. It is used as a gentle starting dose, as a step when the doctor is adjusting the dose gradually, and for patients whose kidney function is reduced and therefore need a lower amount of the medicine.
What Miro is used for
- Diabetic peripheral neuropathy — burning or tingling feet and hands
- Post-herpetic neuralgia — nerve pain after shingles
- Other peripheral neuropathic pain, as diagnosed by a doctor
- Nerve pain that disturbs sleep and daily activity
How it works
Mirogabalin binds tightly and selectively to the α2δ-1 subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels on overactive sensory nerves, and stays bound for longer than older gabapentinoids. This reduces the release of pain-signalling neurotransmitters, calming nerves that are firing pain signals without a real injury behind them.
Directions for use (as prescribed)
- Mirogabalin is normally taken twice a day, morning and evening, with or without food.
- Treatment usually begins low and is increased in steps by the doctor, at intervals of at least a week, until the pain is controlled.
- Doses are reduced when kidney function is impaired — this is where the 2.5mg strength is often used.
- Take it at the same times each day. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is close — never double up.
- Do not stop suddenly. The dose must be tapered by your doctor over at least a week.
Important precautions
- Common effects: sleepiness, dizziness, weight gain, ankle swelling, blurred vision
- Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you
- Avoid alcohol, which increases drowsiness
