Miro 5mg contains Mirogabalin besylate 5mg, a newer-generation alpha-2-delta (α2δ) ligand for neuropathic pain — the burning, shooting, tingling or electric-shock pain caused by damaged nerves. Miro is made by Nabiqasim in three strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg.
5mg twice a day is the usual starting dose for adults with normal kidney function. The doctor then increases the dose in steps if more pain relief is needed.
What Miro is used for
- Diabetic peripheral neuropathy — burning or tingling feet and hands
- Post-herpetic neuralgia — nerve pain after shingles
- Other peripheral neuropathic pain, as diagnosed by a doctor
- Nerve pain that disturbs sleep and daily activity
How it works
Mirogabalin binds tightly and selectively to the α2δ-1 subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels on overactive sensory nerves, and dissociates slowly. This reduces the release of pain-signalling neurotransmitters and calms nerves that keep firing pain signals without a real injury behind them. Compared with older gabapentinoids such as pregabalin, its binding profile is more selective.
Directions for use (as prescribed)
- The usual adult starting dose is 5mg twice a day, morning and evening, with or without food.
- After at least a week the doctor may increase it in steps, up to a maintenance dose of 15mg twice a day.
- Doses are lower for patients with reduced kidney function — the 2.5mg strength exists for this.
- Take at the same times each day. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next dose is close — never double up.
- Do not stop suddenly. The dose must be tapered by your doctor over at least a week.
Important precautions
- Common effects: sleepiness, dizziness, weight gain, ankle swelling, blurred vision
- Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you
- Avoid alcohol, which increases drowsiness
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease — the dose must be adjusted
