What is Vepridone 4mg?

Vepridone 4mg Tablets contain Risperidone 4mg, an atypical antipsychotic blocking dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. The 4mg dose is within the typical therapeutic range for schizophrenia and is commonly used as both a titration step and a maintenance dose. It provides effective antipsychotic coverage with a generally acceptable tolerability profile in most adults.

How Does Vepridone 4mg Work?

Risperidone's D2 receptor blockade in the mesolimbic pathway reduces positive psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, delusions), while 5-HT2A antagonism improves negative symptoms and reduces the risk of EPS compared to first-generation antipsychotics. At 4mg, both antipsychotic efficacy and tolerability are generally well balanced; however, EPS and prolactin elevation risks are higher at 4mg than at lower doses. Risperidone is metabolised by CYP2D6 to its active metabolite, paliperidone.

Uses of Vepridone 4mg

Indicated for: acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia; acute manic and mixed episodes in bipolar I disorder; irritability associated with autistic disorder. The 4mg strength is a common target dose for many adults with schizophrenia. For lower dose steps, see Vepridone 3mg; for a hepatically independent paliperidone option, see Vegadon SR 6mg.

Dosage & Administration

Adults (schizophrenia): 4mg/day is within the usual effective range of 4–6mg/day. Maximum: 16mg/day. Elderly or renally/hepatically impaired patients: start at 0.5mg twice daily and titrate slowly. Administer once or twice daily with or without food. Do not stop abruptly — gradual tapering under physician guidance is required.

Side Effects

Common: akathisia, extrapyramidal symptoms (tremor, rigidity), somnolence, dizziness, nausea, weight gain. Prolactin elevation is prominent at 4mg: galactorrhoea, amenorrhoea, sexual dysfunction are possible. Metabolic effects: weight gain, hyperglycaemia, dyslipidaemia. QTc prolongation reported. Rare: neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), tardive dyskinesia.

Precautions

Contraindicated in dementia-related psychosis (increased mortality). Use caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, QTc-prolonging medications, diabetes, or Parkinson's disease. Monitor metabolic panel, ECG, and movement disorders at baseline and periodically. Avoid abrupt discontinuation. Prescription only (Rx). Consult your psychiatrist. For patients with CYP2D6 variability, paliperidone (see Vegadon SR 3mg) bypasses hepatic metabolism.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is 4mg the final dose of Vepridone or can it be increased?
A: 4mg is within the usual therapeutic range. Your psychiatrist may increase to 6mg or higher based on response, up to a maximum of 16mg/day, but higher doses carry greater EPS risk.

Q: Can Vepridone 4mg be switched to paliperidone?
A: Yes. Paliperidone (Vegadon SR) is the active metabolite of risperidone and is an alternative antipsychotic that bypasses hepatic CYP2D6 metabolism. Switching should be done under psychiatrist supervision.

Q: Is Vepridone 4mg prescription-only in Pakistan?
A: Yes. Risperidone is a prescription-only antipsychotic (Rx). A valid doctor's prescription is required for dispensing.

How To Use

Take Vepridone 4mg once or twice daily as directed by your psychiatrist. The usual target dose for schizophrenia is 4–6mg/day; 4mg/day is a common effective maintenance dose for many adults. FAQs

Is 4mg the usual final dose of risperidone for schizophrenia?

4mg/day is within the standard effective range (4–6mg/day) and is a common maintenance dose. Your psychiatrist will determine if dose adjustment is needed based on your response.

Can Vepridone 4mg be switched to paliperidone?

Yes. Paliperidone (e.g., Vegadon SR) is risperidone's active metabolite and bypasses hepatic CYP2D6 metabolism. Switching should only be done under psychiatrist supervision.

Is Vepridone 4mg available without a prescription in Pakistan?

No. Risperidone is a prescription-only antipsychotic (Rx). A valid doctor's prescription is required for dispensing.
